
Why Your Infrared Heaters Actually Die
Here is a little secret from the shop floor: most replacement infrared heating elements don’t fail because the filament just “gives up.” Usually, it’s the lead-wire seal that lets you down. If you’re running an IP65-rated heater, that seal is the only thing standing between your electrical junctions and a mess of moisture or grime. Cheap, generic seals aren’t built for the heat. They crack. Once they do, oxidation moves in, and before you know it, you’ve got a short circuit on your hands. The problem with “standard” seals A lot of seals use low-temp silicones. The problem? A quartz tube is constantly expanding and contracting as it heats up and cools down. Those cheap silicones just can’t keep up. We do things differently. We use a high-temp potting compound that actually bonds chemically to the lead wire. No air gaps. No one-way doors for moisture to sneak through. When a seal isn’t airtight, the heat actually sucks moisture right into the connection point. We call it “carbon tracking.” The insulation chars, the electricity finds a shortcut it wasn’t supposed to take, and—pop—there goes your fuse or your controller. Dealing with the heat Heat aging is just physics. At those temperatures, your basic PVC or cheap braided leads get brittle. They snap. We pick lead-wires that can handle the specific “heat soak” of the lamp. But the real trick is how we put them together. Instead of just slapping a coating on at the end, we integrate the sealing into the assembly. This means the seal moves with the wire, not against it. One quick heads-up on installation There is a trade-off here. Because that IP65 seal is so tight, the lead-wire is a bit more rigid. Please, don’t bend these wires at sharp angles when you’re installing them. If you do, you risk a stress fracture in the potting material. Just leave yourself a nice, loose service loop. If you pull the wires too tight, you’re basically creating a leak path for the exact same contaminants the seal was designed to keep out. Give it some breathing room, and it’ll last.
