
Getting More Out of Your SMI Blow Molding Heaters
If you’re running an older SMI machine, you know the frustration. You’re trying to hit your targets, but the cycle times just aren’t where they need to be. It feels like the machine is dragging its feet. The good news? You probably don’t need to drop a fortune on a brand-new oven. Most of the time, the secret is just swapping out your infrared heating elements. The trick is heat density. Standard lamps are fine, but they often don’t pack enough punch for high-speed preforms. By switching to high-wattage halogen quartz tubes, you’re basically hitting the PET wall with more shortwave IR radiation. It’s simple: more heat, faster. The preform spends less time in the oven, and your output goes up. But a quick word of warning:watch your voltage. If you plug a 230V lamp into a 400V circuit, it’ll pop instantly. It’s a costly mistake. Just make sure your wattage matches your power supply before you flip the switch. Will it actually fit? Yes. We use high-purity quartz glass so the heat actually gets into the plastic instead of getting trapped in the glass. Most of these use R7s or SK15 connectors. They’re “drop-in” replacements. You just slide them into the existing sockets. No rewiring the whole chassis, no headache. If you’re struggling with the neck of the bottle getting too soft, look into coated tubes. They push the heat toward the body and away from the top, which keeps the neck from warping. The reality of the shop floor Here is the catch. Faster cycles and higher wattage mean more ambient heat. Your cooling fans are going to have to work a lot harder. If your vents are clogged or your airflow is weak, you’ll start seeing “hot spots.” That leads to uneven walls or that annoying pearlescent look in the finished bottle. Before you go for the highest wattage available, take a look at your ventilation. Make sure the air is actually moving. If it is, you’re good to go.
