
Getting Your SACMI Rotary Blow Molders to Heat Up—Fast
If you’re running SACMI rotary machines, you know the pace is relentless. You’ve only got a tiny window of time to get that PET preform hot enough to mold. If the heat isn’t perfect, you end up with cold spots, wonky wall thickness, or bottles that just look deformed. It’s a headache nobody needs. That’s why we build our Quartz IR lamps to hit the target temperature almost instantly.
Cutting Out the Lag
Nobody likes waiting around for a machine to warm up. To stop that start-up lag, we play around with the filament’s thermal mass. Basically, a lighter filament heats up way faster. We pack a lot of wattage into a short length, so the heat hits exactly where the preform needs it. It’s a quick ramp-up. Just a heads-up, though: make sure your power controllers can handle those sudden spikes. If your electrical setup isn’t ready for that initial surge of power, you’re going to be tripping breakers every time you do a cold start.
The Right Stuff for the Job
We use high-purity fused quartz because it can take the punch of rapid heating and cooling. Standard glass would just shatter. For these SACMI setups, we usually go with short-wave IR. Why? Because short-wave heat sinks deeper into the plastic, and it does it faster. And since these machines vibrate a lot, we didn’t mess around with the connectors. They’re simple drop-in replacements with precision terminals. This stops the arcing that usually kills lamps prematurely in a rotary environment.
The Trade-off
Here’s the thing: speed comes with a price. These high-intensity lamps put out a lot of waste heat. While the preform is getting exactly what it needs, the oven housing is taking a beating. Keep your cooling blowers clean. Seriously. If your airflow slips, the housing overheats and your quartz envelope will burn out way sooner than it should. Keep the air moving, and your lamps will last.
