
Can You Actually Speed Up an Old Blow Molding Machine Just by Swapping the Heaters?
If you’re running an older blow molding machine, you know the frustration. The machine works, but the cycle times are sluggish. You want more bottles out the door, but nobody wants to drop a fortune on a brand-new machine when the one you have still breathes. Here is a little secret: you can often squeeze way more production out of your current oven just by swapping those standard lamps for high-density quartz tube heaters.
The trick to heating PET
Heating PET preforms is a balancing act. If you get it wrong, you end up with that annoying pearlescence or walls that are thin in some spots and thick in others. Most old heaters have “cold spots” or just take forever to get up to temp. We use short-wave infrared tech in our quartz tubes to fix that. It pushes the heat deep into the plastic wall, and it does it fast. When you increase the wattage per linear millimeter, the preform doesn’t have to hang out in the heating zone nearly as long.**That’s where your time goes.**Shorter heating time means a faster cycle. Plain and simple.
The “gotchas” with hardware
Now, this isn’t just “plug and play” without a little thought. This is where things usually go sideways for engineers. You have to get the voltage and the connectors right. We use R7s or Sk15 bases so they slide right in. But if you’re jumping from a 1500W tube to a 2500W unit, stop for a second. Check your ballast. Check your wiring. High-wattage tubes put out a massive amount of heat. If your cooling fans aren’t up to the task, the ambient temperature around the oven frame will spike, and you might actually warp your reflectors. It’s worth the double-check.
A few things to keep in mind
Quartz is the gold standard for a reason—it lets infrared radiation through without wasting energy. We even have coated versions if you’re working with specific PET grades that need a different spectrum. But here is the catch: these high-output tubes are a bit finicky. **Don’t touch the glass.**Seriously. A single fingerprint or a smudge of oil from your skin during installation can create a hot spot. That hot spot will eat through the quartz, and your expensive new tube will burn out way too soon. Keep them clean, wire them up right, and you’ve basically tricked your old machine into acting like a new one—without the massive capital hit.
