
Getting More Out of Your SMI SR 8 Blower
Look, you can’t just swap a bulb and expect a miracle. But you can fix a bottleneck. If you’re running an older SMI SR 8, the heating oven is usually what’s holding you back. You know the feeling: your preforms aren’t hitting the right temperature, your cycle times start creeping up, and suddenly you’re staring at a pile of scrap. It’s frustrating. That’s exactly why we built our replacement infrared lamps—to kill that thermal lag. The tricky part about heat Getting the heat right is a balancing act. We spec these lamps for high wattage and precise voltage so the energy actually gets deep into the PET wall, and it does it fast. But you have to be careful. A drop-in replacement needs to fit the original SMI footprint and electrical load perfectly. If you try to push too much power through old, tired wiring? You’ll trip breakers. On the flip side, if you go too low, you get those annoying “cold spots.” That’s how you end up with uneven walls and bottles that burst the second they hit pressure. Built to take a beating We use heavy-wall quartz glass because these things go through a lot of thermal shock with rapid cycling. We also added a halogen cycle. It stops the tungsten from evaporating and clouding the tube, which means the light stays bright and the heat stays consistent for thousands of hours. Depending on which version of the SR 8 you’ve got, we use standard R7s or SK15 connectors. You just plug them in. No hacking the sockets, no weird modifications. One thing to watch out for Here’s the catch: more heat density means faster warm-ups and more bottles per hour, but it also makes the inside of the oven hotter. If your cooling blowers are clogged with dust or just plain dying, you’re going to overheat the neck of the preform. Before you crank up the power, take a minute to make sure your airflow is actually clear. It’s a simple move. Upgrading your heating elements is the fastest way to squeeze more speed out of an old machine without having to buy a whole new blower.
