
Making Bathroom Heaters That Don’t Blind You
Most bathroom heaters use short-wave infrared lamps to get you warm the second you flip the switch. They work great, but there’s a catch: the light. Ever noticed how some of these heaters give off a harsh, blinding glare? It’s annoying for adults, but for a baby with developing eyes, it can actually be stressful. We figured out a way to fix that by tweaking the light spectrum. Easy on the eyes Instead of using the standard clear quartz glass, we use specialized coatings or “doped” quartz. Think of it like a pair of high-end sunglasses for your heater. It filters out that stabbing blue light and the blinding white glare, leaving you with a soft, dimmed glow. You still get all that cozy heat hitting your skin, but without the retinal fatigue. You lose a tiny bit of raw brightness, but honestly? Your eyes will thank you. Built for the steam Bathrooms are basically torture chambers for electronics. Between the steam and the humidity, things tend to corrode or short out pretty quickly. To stop that from happening, we use heavy-duty IP-rated seals and gaskets that keep moisture far away from the electrical guts. We also use halogen-filled quartz tubes for the heating elements. The halogen lets us crank up the heat without the filament burning out after a few months. It just lasts longer. A few tips for the install If you’re wiring these into a ceiling, you’ve got to be smart about the heat. These lamps pack a punch. If the housing isn’t vented right, that heat gets trapped. Before you know it, you’ve warped the plastic casing or tripped the thermal cutoff. To play it safe, we always suggest adding a dedicated thermal fuse—especially if you’re dealing with a tight ceiling void. And one last thing: check your wiring gauge. If the wires are too thin for the wattage, you’ll get a voltage drop, and your heater won’t actually feel as warm as it should.
