
Fixing Those Annoying Heat Gaps in KHS Blowing Machines
Ever pull a bottle off the line and notice the walls are uneven? Or worse, the whole thing is deformed? It’s a headache. Usually, it comes down to how the heat is hitting the preform in your KHS machine. Most people just stick with the standard lamps, but we’ve spent a lot of time building a replacement that actually fixes the way heat spreads.
Why your heat is uneven
Here’s the thing about standard infrared lamps: they’re rarely perfect. You often get these “cold spots” at the ends or a center that’s way too hot. It’s frustrating. We fixed this by changing how the filament is wound and using a higher grade of quartz glass. We tightened up the geometry so the heat stays flat and consistent across the whole tube. No more scorching the middle of the PET preform while the base stays cold. It just works.
Getting them installed
You don’t need to rewire your entire floor to use these. We built them to fit the original electrical footprint. Whether you’re using R7s or Sk15 connectors, they just slide right into your existing sockets. We spec these for high wattage, so you don’t have to sacrifice your cycle times to get better quality. One quick tip: keep an eye on your voltage. If you’re on a 230V or 400V circuit and you get a spike, it’ll eat your lamps alive. It’s worth double-checking your thyristor controllers to make sure the power ramps up smoothly.
The reality of the job
Now, there’s a trade-off. Pushing out more heat helps you move faster, but it puts more stress on the quartz. If your oven’s airflow is clogged or your reflectors are covered in grime, these lamps will run way too hot and burn out early. Keep those reflectors polished. When the heat actually bounces back the way it should, you get a consistent bottle wall and way less scrap hitting the floor. It’s a simple fix that saves a lot of wasted plastic.
